Today we are going to open a case that you may have been waiting for months. In the world of technology, initial reviews are like the first date; everything is stylish, ironed and full of excitement. But the reality of a product, the true character of the gadget, is revealed when you live with it. Not for a week, not for a month, but for a whole year!
In our long-term review of the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which is the result of real user experience, analysis of feedback from other users and careful examination of reliable global sources, we want to see what problems this masterpiece of Apple engineering has found after time? Does its battery deteriorate like the 14 series? Does the titanium of the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s body scratch and dent? Is that much-hyped camera control button really functional or was it just a publicity stunt?

iPhone 16 Pro Max Long Term Review

iPhone 16 Pro Max – One Year Real-World Review Flow

STEP 01
Titanium Body & Build Quality
Natural Titanium shows excellent scratch resistance. Colored models suffer from coating discoloration and quality control issues, especially Desert Titanium.
STEP 02
Size, Weight & Ergonomics
Lighter than steel but larger (6.9″). Top-heavy design causes hand fatigue and increases drop risk, especially without a case.
STEP 03
Display & Ceramic Shield Reality
Incredible brightness and thin bezels, but extremely prone to micro-scratches. Screen protector is strongly recommended.
STEP 04
Touch Issues & Edge Detection
Narrow bezels cause touch delays or false inputs. iOS updates helped but did not fully fix the issue.
STEP 05
Camera Control Button
Poor placement and inaccurate swipe control. Mostly useful only as a camera shortcut, not a revolution.
STEP 06
Battery Health & Charging
Excellent long-term battery health (≈96%). Charging speed remains slow compared to competitors.
STEP 07
Camera System Performance
Ultra-wide upgrade dramatically improves macro and low-light shots. Digital zoom gap (1x–4.9x) still hurts indoor photos.
STEP 08
Video & Audio Mastery
Best-in-class video, stabilization and audio mixing. Lens protectors are not recommended due to quality loss.
STEP 09
A18 Pro Performance & Heat
Extremely fast in daily use, but thermal throttling appears during heavy gaming or 5G usage.
STEP 10
Apple Intelligence Impact
AI runs locally, increasing heat and battery drain. Disabling AI improves thermal stability.
STEP 11
Speaker Quality
Powerful and deep stereo sound. Speaker grills require periodic cleaning.
FINAL
Final Verdict
A powerful work tool with compromises. Great for creators, but heat, screen scratches and ergonomics make waiting for iPhone 17 Pro Max a smart option.

When the iPhone 15 Pro Max was introduced with a titanium body, we were all worried about smudges and scratches. Now, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max, Apple claims to have improved the manufacturing process. But what is the reality?
After a year of constant use, we have to admit that the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s titanium frame is thicker than we thought. Fortunately, the Natural Titanium version shows much less scratches and scuffs, since it doesn’t have the PVD coating that comes with the black or blue models. If you remember, the older steel models (like the 12 and 13 Pro) would show microscopic scratches even with a wipe, but here the matte titanium retains its character.

But it’s not the same for all colors. We’ve had a lot of reports, especially from users who bought the new and exclusive Desert Titanium color. Apparently, there were some quality control issues in the production line, and some of these phones even came out of the box with tiny spots or color mismatches on the frame. This is a wake-up call for those who are obsessed. Apple has moved production to India, and some analysts say that this slight quality drop may be due to the cost of moving the production line from China to India.
Let’s be honest; the iPhone 16 Pro Max is a luxury brick. Although the phone weighs less than the old steel models thanks to titanium, the dimensions of the phone have increased (6.9 inches), and this increase in size has upset the weight balance of the phone. The top of the phone, where the giant camera modules are located, is heavier.
What is the result? When you try to use the phone with one hand, for example, on the subway or when you lie down, the phone constantly wants to hang from your hand. The edges of the phone, although slightly rounded, are still so sharp that after half an hour of chatting or playing, your little finger (which is the support of the phone) will leave a mark and cause pain. If you have medium or small hands, using this phone without a protective case is almost impossible and there is a high risk of dropping it.
In a year of use, the phone has been dropped a few times. The glass back of the phone and the titanium frame have shown good resistance. But there is one strange thing; small discolorations on the edges, which even according to reviews in one fall, a small piece of the frame color faded, revealing the natural color of the metal underneath. This shows that despite Apple’s advertising, this color coating has not been absorbed by the metal as much as it should and if the impact is sharp, the color will fade.

iPhone 16 Pro Max display review in the long term

The 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display of this phone is undoubtedly one of the best displays in the world. The brightness of 2000 nits in direct sunlight means you have no problem reading messages. The screen borders are as narrow as possible and you can see the content in it. But…

The Ceramic Shield Paradox

This is where many people are fooled by advertising. Apple says that the new generation Ceramic Shield is the most resistant glass used in smartphones. Yes, this glass is really resistant to breaking and shattering. But there is an unwritten rule in materials science; the more impact-resistant the glass is (the softer it is to absorb energy), the weaker it is against scratches and dents.
Our year-long experience and that of many other users shows that the iPhone 16 Pro Max screen is extremely prone to micro-scratches. Even if you don’t put the phone in your pocket with the keys, it seems like even dust particles in the air scratch it! We even had reports of deep scratches that were not clear when and how they were created.
Strong recommendation: If you are very sensitive to such things, put a quality glass on it the moment you unbox the phone, before you even turn it on. Don’t trust Apple at all, otherwise after a few months you will be faced with a dull and scratched screen that will break your heart.

One issue that was very annoying in the first months and is still seen sometimes is the touch input delay. Especially the edges of the screen, due to the narrowing of the bezels, sometimes do not recognize touches correctly (Palm Rejection is very sensitive) or, conversely, register unwanted touches. In games like Call of Duty Mobile, this can be a matter of life and death! You put your finger on the fire button but it does not work because the corner of your hand is stuck to the edge of the screen. Apple has tried to improve this with iOS updates, but it has not been completely fixed yet.

Long-term review of the iPhone 16 Pro Max Camera Control button

Let’s move on to the most controversial hardware feature of the iPhone 16; the camera control button. Apple showed this button at the launch event as if it was going to reinvent mobile photography. A button with a sapphire surface, sensitive to pressure and capacitive touch. But what’s the story after a year of actual use?
The first and biggest problem with this button is its location. When you hold the phone in landscape mode to take a photo, your right index finger does not naturally rest on the button. The button is a lot in the middle and you have to stretch your finger to reach it. This finger stretch causes the phone to shake and the photo to be blurry! Even in portrait mode, there is no place for the button in your hand and it is difficult to access.

Apple has put many features on this button, such as zooming by swiping your finger (Swipe) or changing the aperture. But in practice? It’s a disaster. The button’s touch accuracy is not enough to allow you to zoom accurately. Many times you want to zoom in a little, and suddenly it jumps to 5x or vice versa.
One of the biggest complaints in the first months was that when you held the phone normally, your hand would touch the button and the camera would open. Apple was forced to add new settings in iOS 18.2 and later updates. Now you can set the button to activate with a double click or set its pressure sensitivity to Firmer.
These settings have reduced the problem, but the truth is that this button feels more like an extra than a help. Its only useful use in this year has been as a shortcut. That is, the phone is in my pocket, I press the button and lift it up, and the camera is ready. That’s it.

Long-term battery performance review of the iPhone 16 Pro Max

Battery Champion 🏆

🔋 96% battery health after 1 year
🔥 Excellent thermal management
🐢 Still slow charging (1.5–2 hours)

If you remember, the iPhone 14 Pro Max had a strange drop in battery health after a year, reaching 88 percent. But the iPhone 16 Pro Max has done a great job in this regard. After a year of heavy use, content creation, gaming, and Always On Display, the phone’s battery health is at 96 percent. This is a great number for a year of use. Other user reports also show that most people with the correct charging pattern are above 95 percent.(Practical tricks for playing games with your Samsung phone)

This shows that Apple has really improved the thermal management during charging and the type of battery chemistry. Of course, an important point is that we did not always use the Limited to 80% feature and let Optimized Charging do its job. Overall, this phone has one of the best batteries among all flagships and takes the stress out of running out of battery.
Although the battery is good, the charging speed is still slow. With a 20 or 30 watt adapter, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to fully charge the phone. Compared to Xiaomi phones that charge in 20 minutes, this time flies!

iPhone 16 Pro Max Camera Performance Review in the Long Term

Camera: Apple’s Stronghold

🎥 Best video recording on any smartphone
🌙 Massive low-light improvements
🔍 Weak spot: digital zoom between 1x–4.9x

Button issues aside, the iPhone 16 Pro Max camera system itself is a masterpiece. After thousands of photos and hours of video, I can say that this phone has the most reliable camera in the mobile world.
On paper, the change from 12 to 48 megapixels of the ultra-wide camera may not be very noticeable, but in practice the difference is earth to sky.

  1. Macro photography: Now macro photos have crazy detail. You can see the texture of fabric or the veins of flower petals with clarity that was not possible before.
  2. Low light: Thanks to Pixel Binning technology (combining 4 pixels in 1 pixel), ultra-wide photos at night have much less noise and we no longer see that watercolor look and blurry corners of the image.
The 5x tetraprism lens, now on both the Pro and Pro Max, has excellent quality. But there is a blind spot. The range between 1x and 4.9x zoom is digitally cropped from the main sensor. In good lighting conditions, this is not a problem because the main 48-megapixel sensor has enough data to maintain quality. But in low light or indoors, photos taken with 3x zoom (which is very common) will suffer in quality because you are effectively zooming digitally. I wish Apple would have kept a separate 3x lens like Samsung.

Video and audio; Apple’s classroom!

In the video department, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is still unbeatable. Recording 4K videos at 120 frames per second (Slow Motion) is a cinematic feature that gives editors a lot of freedom. The stabilization (Action Mode) is so good that it feels like you put the phone on a gimbal. The new Audio Mix feature, which uses AI to remove background noise and isolate the voice of the subject, is also a godsend for vloggers and those who shoot stories in crowded environments.
A question that many people ask: Should we put a protector on the camera lens?
Look, iPhone lenses are made of sapphire crystal. This means they are much harder than regular glass (about 8 or 9 on the Mohs scale). However, JerryRigEverything tests and user experiences show that this sapphire is not pure and has impurities, so it can be scratched with very hard tools.
However, I do not recommend putting a lens protector on. Why? Because it adds a layer of poor-quality glass in front of the lens, which causes lens flare at night, laser focus problems, and generally lowers the quality of your photos. It is better to get a case with raised edges around the camera so that the lens does not hit surfaces directly.

Long-term hardware review of the iPhone 16 Pro Max

The beating heart of this phone is the A18 Pro chip, built on the second-generation 3nm architecture. In benchmarks, this chipset swallows up competitors like Snapdragon and Dimensity. But benchmarks are not bread and water! What about in the real world?
In normal use (Instagram, web browsing, photo editing), the phone flies. There is no lag, animations are smooth (except for iOS bugs), and multitasking is great. 8GB of RAM may seem low compared to 12 or 16GB of Android, but iOS’s RAM management is so good that it keeps apps open for a long time.

Thermal Issues

Here is the Achilles heel of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Although Apple said it used a new graphite chassis to dissipate heat, the phone still gets hot. When you play heavy games like Genshin Impact or Call of Duty Mobile with the highest graphics and frame rate, the phone gets extremely hot after 20 minutes. This heat causes the phone’s protection system to activate and dim the screen. In the middle of the game, the screen suddenly goes dark, which is very annoying!
In addition to gaming, when you use 5G/LTE data and make video calls or work with artificial intelligence at the same time, the body of the phone gets worryingly hot. It seems that Apple’s lack of the Vapor Chamber cooling system that is in competitors like the S24 Ultra or S25 Ultra shows itself here. This cooling system was added to the iPhone 17, which partially solved this problem.

Long-term iPhone 16 Pro Max software review

This year, Apple focused all its attention on artificial intelligence, or Apple Intelligence. New Siri, emoji generation (Genmoji), removing objects from photos (Clean Up), and text summarization. Geographical Restriction: To activate, you must set the phone language and Siri to English (US) and the phone region to America.

An important technical point that few people mention. Apple’s artificial intelligence models (LLM) run locally on the phone itself (for greater security). These heavy processing on the Neural Engine causes high battery consumption and heat generation. Many users (including us) have noticed after a while that by turning off Apple Intelligence features, our phone runs cooler and lasts longer!

Long-term speaker performance of the iPhone 16 Pro Max

The iPhone 16 Pro Max’s stereo audio system has excellent volume and resolution. The bass is so deep that you can feel the vibration on the back of the phone. One problem that occurs in the long term is the design of the speaker grilles on the bottom of the phone. These holes are prone to attracting pocket lint and grease. After a few months, you may feel that the sound is a little muffled or tingly at high volumes.
The solution? Every two to three months, gently brush the grilles with a very soft, clean toothbrush to remove dust. Do not use high-pressure air or liquids that will kill the speaker!

Is the iPhone 16 Pro Max still worth buying?

After a year of using the iPhone 16 Pro Max, it can be said that it is a great work tool, but an expensive and troublesome toy.
Strengths of the iPhone 16 Pro Max (why buy it?):

  • Indestructible battery: The best battery we have ever seen on an iPhone with excellent health.
  • Video camera: If you are a content creator, this phone is worth investing in.
  • Build quality: Titanium (if the color is natural) will last a long time.
  • USB-C port: Freedom to connect external hard drives, microphones and monitors.
Weaknesses of the iPhone 16 Pro Max (why not buy it?):
  • Camera Control button: An imperfect innovation that is more of a nuisance than a help.
  • Screen Scratches: Without glass, the screen will crack very quickly.
  • Heat: It gets hot during heavy use and performance drops.
  • AI is good and it takes a long time to charge.
If you currently have an iPhone 13 Pro Max or older and your budget allows, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is a delight. Everything is faster, smoother, and better.
But if you have newer iPhones or are just getting your first iPhone, considering the prices right now, buying the iPhone 17 Pro Max can be an attractive option and a real generational change, given that it has 12 GB of RAM, has a Vapor Chamber cooling system, and has full 48 megapixel cameras (even telephoto) and does not have the heat problems of this phone. Thank you all for sticking with us until the end of this long review. I hope this one-year experience can help you make the right choice.
